A package that includes two airports is rare. A package that includes two well done airports, is even more rare!
But we’ve found it thanks to the efforts of Juan Pedro, that in than a year of development, managed to release LEMH and LESL (Menorca’s main airport and Mahon aeroclub).
Airports are highly detailed and optimized for high performance. Airport designed to be adapted to the SpainUHDMesh terrain mesh that you can download for free here and with possible voluntary donation to the creators. SpainUHDA kind of feature list
The scenery comes with detailed runway textures, even though there is something similar to an oil stain that seems unrealistic, both because it has no reflections and it has undefined edges.
That was the first impression I got, but once I’ve checked the pic taken in game with a real satellite photo, I’ve known that this should be an asphalt patch, and it’s placed exactly where it is in real life.
Even though it’s less detailed than what I could have expected, it demonstrates an outstanding attention to details.
I could have expected more detail on the apron ground textures, especially in the general aviation zone.
I mean, the textures are good, but a bit addition of detail would be appreciated.
The terminals are smoothly modeled, and the textures are pretty detailed. I’ve noticed a proper PBR implementation, especially on the glass of the various buildings.
Overall the experience is realistic, even though there is a kind of flickering effect when you are close to the main terminal building.
That effect is barely noticeable if you aren’t close to the object, but it’s something that you don’t want to see in a video or a shot, so be aware if you are a video-maker.
The vertical signals are visible from decent distance.
There are static aicrafts, from the default library I guess, even though I’m not sure that Delta operates routes to Menorca. And it’s definitely unrealistic to see a United Airlines A320 sitting there, that’s a feature that should be fixed in WED with the codes of the airlines that actually operate in the Spanish island.
The ground traffic features custom routes with some custom vehicles including very nice busses, so the result is almost excellent.
About Mahon, the aero club is very detailed, the quality implemented in the Menorca’s ground texture is the same here, and the experience matches exactly the one I wanted for a little airfield.
The buildings are very detailed, just look at the rendering of the flight school.
As stated, the airports don’t feature any photorealistic scenery, but it’s compatible with SpainUHD.
Since the zoom level of SpainUHD might just be too heavy for medium/low end machines, it would be a good thing if you choose to create your own tiles.
Outside the airport
The surroundings of the airport are well realized, even though there is a major bug in the rendering of the overpass… You see that the guard-rail does not follow the street.
I thought it was a problem regarding my machine, but it’s something I saw even on other computers.
Anyway, the textures, the parking lots, and the other buildings in the immediate vicinity of the airport, are well done, and they tend to add more realism and an interesting eye-candy effect to this scenery.
The cities are not modeled, you have only a few typical building near both the airports included in this package.
It’s interesting to see the jail and some houses just outside Mahon, a good addition that, anyway, might need a more accurate exclusion zone for trees.
At night Mahon is dark, because there are no runway, apron, general lights at the airfield.
That said, the custom lights of the terminals and of the control tower are very realistic.
Even though the glass is not transparent, it has a good appearance.
This is a scenery that runs smoothly on every machine, the level of detail is as good as the optimization, it required a long development to reach that result, but it’s always appreciated to see sceneries that does not affect the FPS more than what is necessary.
To be fair I’m quite surprised about Menorca because we shouldn’t forget that this is Juan Pedro’s debut scenery, and there are only a couple of bugs that are easily fixable in the future updates.
The price is a hot topic, indeed there have been a lot of discussion, because someone had found that too high.
First, we have to consider that sim market applies the VAT depending on where you live… this lead some countries to have taxes up to 22%…
So, you shouldn’t complain about different prices for different users
That’s a lot, but it does not depend on sim market, only on your government.
Considering that in Italy we apply a 22% VAT, the base price is exactly 24€, at the moment slightly more than 27$.
If you consider that you are getting two detailed sceneries in a single package, the price isn’t high at all.
Maybe you might want to wait for a fix regarding static aircrafts and maybe slightly better apron textures, but you should also consider that there are sceneries with bad reviews at a higher price.
The scenery is available here.
